Why Kensington patients choose us for IV sedation dentistry

Sedation enquiries from Kensington often come with an overseas backstory. W8 has a highly international population, and dental fear acquired in a clinic in another country thirty years ago travels with people — usually attached to a specific memory of being held still, or of treatment carried out without adequate anaesthetic. The other W8 pattern is the patient who has been quoted for sedation privately in central London at two or three times our fee and assumed that was simply what it costs.

Sedation is the one appointment you cannot drive to or from, so the practical question for Kensington patients is the escort, not the distance. Eighteen minutes by Tube, or around fifteen by taxi outside rush hour, is a journey a friend or partner can realistically commit to for a morning.

Benefits of IV sedation dentistry

  • Treatment that would take five or six visits can often be done in one appointment
  • You stay awake and able to respond — this is not a general anaesthetic
  • Most patients remember very little of the appointment itself
  • Suits needle phobia, a strong gag reflex, or difficulty sitting still for long
  • Given on site in Acton by Dr Kartik Patel BDS, with the team monitoring you throughout

IV Sedation step by step

  1. Sedation assessment

A shorter appointment first: we examine you, review your medical history and medication, explain what sedation will and will not do, and decide together whether it is the right option.

  2. Plan and written quote

You leave knowing exactly what is being done, how long we expect to need and what the whole thing costs — sedation and treatment together. Then you decide in your own time.

  3. Arrive with your escort

A responsible adult over 18 brings you or meets you here. We cannot sedate you if you arrive alone, so this is the part to arrange early.

  4. Cannula, then treatment

A fine cannula goes into your hand or arm and the sedative follows, taking effect in a minute or two. You are monitored continuously while the treatment is carried out as planned.

  5. Recovery and the rest of the day

Twenty to thirty minutes resting with us, then home with your escort. No driving, work or important decisions for the rest of the day. Most people feel normal again the next morning.

Arranging sedation when your escort is not in the country

For Kensington patients this is the problem that comes up most. We cannot sedate you if you arrive alone — a responsible adult over 18 has to bring you or meet you here, take you home and ideally stay with you for the evening. They do not have to be a relative: a friend, a neighbour, a colleague or a housekeeper is fine, and for patients whose family is abroad that is usually the answer. What does not work is a hotel concierge who waves you into a taxi, or a driver who takes you home and leaves. If arranging it is genuinely difficult, tell us at the assessment: sometimes the right plan is to treat you under local anaesthetic in shorter visits instead, and we would rather say that than put you in an unsafe position.

IV Sedation in Kensington — your questions answered

My family live abroad. Who can be my escort for sedation?

Any responsible adult over 18 who can bring you or meet you here, take you home and ideally stay for the evening — a friend, neighbour, colleague or housekeeper. A taxi driver or a concierge is not enough. If it cannot be arranged, we will look at treating you under local anaesthetic in shorter visits instead.

Why is sedation so much cheaper than in central London?

Overheads again. Sedation here is from £450 for the first hour and £250 for each additional hour, against £900–£1,500 for a comparable private sedation appointment in W1. The sedationist is qualified in intravenous conscious sedation and you are monitored throughout either way.

Will I remember the treatment?

Most people remember arriving, then very little until recovery. Some recall fragments and a few remember more than they expected, so we will not promise you a complete blank — only that the memory is usually hazy and far less distressing than being fully aware.

Do I definitely need someone to come with me?

Yes. A responsible adult over 18 has to bring you or meet you here, take you home and ideally stay with you for the evening. We cannot go ahead if you arrive alone. If arranging an escort is difficult, tell us early and we will work around the timing.

Is IV sedation the same as being put to sleep?

No. A general anaesthetic makes you fully unconscious and is given in hospital. IV sedation leaves you awake, breathing for yourself and able to respond, but deeply relaxed and uninterested in what is happening. It is sometimes called twilight sedation for that reason.
